Issues and Developments in the Investigation of Missing Persons and Unidentified Human Remains: An Update from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM)
Abstract: One of the tragedies of missing persons is that is does not discriminate; it is universal, crossing age, gender, ancestry, and class. In this presentation we examine the complexities associated with identifying deceased persons in the context of long-term missing persons cases which include preservation, suitability of identification methods, changes in policies and procedures, and record management. In addition, we discuss improvements in stakeholder coordination, and present case studies that highlight some of the technological developments that are contributing to providing families with more timely identifications.
