Title: Reflection of a Career in the Criminal Justice System

Speaker: Justice Richard Refshauge

Abstract: In his address, Justice Refshauge will have licence to reflect on his long and distinguished career in the criminal justice system and particularly the changes and challenges facing the community, and the legal and forensic sectors. 

Bio: Justice Richard Refshauge is a distinguished jurist who has been a leading figure in the local and national legal profession since graduating from ANU in 1975. He has used his legal expertise and experience for the betterment of society and to promote and elevate the cultural sector. In 1998, he was appointed the third ACT Director of Public Prosecutions and in 2008 he was appointed a Judge of the ACT Supreme Court. His extensive volunteer work over many years reflects his deep concern for questions of social justice and support for the most disadvantaged or marginalised groups in society. 

Richard has made a significant contribution to the national awareness of the value and importance of volunteering, by being involved with Australian Volunteers International for more than 40 years. He was an integral part in establishing a national policy of harm minimisation to respond to and support people with drug addiction and assist in the effective diminishing of HIV/AIDS. 

He has used his legal expertise to support many arts organisations in Canberra as a voluntary board member, and for ten years was Chair of the ACT Cultural Council. Richard has contributed a significant amount of time as a volunteer and ambassador for ANU. 

For over 30 years he has lectured in Civil Litigation and its predecessor courses in the ANU College of Law. In 2001, he was appointed as Adjunct Professor. 

Richard’s career is a wonderful demonstration of giving back – nationally, locally and to the University.
